An Interview with Lead Architect, Connor Smith | Editorial by Connor Ferris Architects
In today’s design-conscious world, more people than ever are turning to architects not just for drawings, but for guidance, clarity, and inspiration. At Connor Ferris Architects, based in Chelmsford and working across Essex, we believe that good architecture begins with good communication.
Clients often come to us with similar questions from how the process works, to fees, planning, and what value we bring. So, we sat down with Lead Architect Connor Smith to walk through the most common things people ask and why the answers matter.
1. “What exactly does an architect do?”
Connor:
We’re often the first person a client calls when they’re thinking of changing their space, and often, they don’t know where to start. Our job is to take that vision and make it real.
That means more than just drawing a plan. We help clients:
- Unlock potential in their site or home
- Navigate planning permission
- Design something beautiful and buildable
- Coordinate consultants and builders
- Ensure compliance with building regulations
We’re creative strategists, technical experts, and trusted guides, all rolled into one.
2. “How much does it cost to hire an architect?”
Connor:
It’s a fair and important question. Every project is different, so our fees are tailored to scope and complexity, but we’re always transparent from the outset.
For example:
- Early design or planning stages are usually fixed-fee
- We also offer flexible, stage-based packages, so clients can scale support as needed
Investing in an architect often means avoiding costly errors later, maximising value, and achieving something that lasts.
3. “Do I really need an architect for my project?”
Connor:
It depends on the ambition and complexity. But in most cases, yes.If you’re extending a home, building new, or working on a plot with planning constraints, an architect will help you make smarter decisions, avoid pitfalls, and design something that genuinely works for the long term.
We’ve helped clients transform awkward plots, navigate tight budgets, and create homes that completely reframe how they live.
4. “What’s the difference between an architect and a designer?”
Connor:
Legally, in the UK, only someone registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) can call themselves an architect. We’ve gone through at least 7 years of education, practical training, and exams to get there.
While many designers offer valuable services, hiring a registered architect gives you:
- Accountability
- Professional insurance
- A code of conduct
- A far broader knowledge base, spanning design, law, construction, and project delivery
You’re not just buying drawings. You’re investing in expertise, trust, and a design outcome that stands the test of time.
5. “Can you help with planning permission?”
Connor:
Yes, and that’s a huge part of what we do.Planning policy can feel like a minefield, but we guide clients through every step from pre-app advice to submission, drawings, and negotiations. We’ve worked closely with councils like Chelmsford, Brentwood, Maldon, and beyond.
Sometimes a project falls under Permitted Development, in which case we’ll apply for a Lawful Development Certificate to protect your build. Either way, we handle the detail, so our clients don’t have to worry about it.
6. “Do you have builders you work with?”
Connor:
We do and this is often overlooked. Having the right builder can make or break a project.Over time, we’ve built strong relationships with trusted contractors across Essex. We support clients with tendering, quote comparisons, and contract setup, helping them choose not just based on price but on quality, reliability, and fit.
We also offer site-stage support to ensure the build runs smoothly and aligns with the original vision.
7. “Why does architecture really matter?”
Connor:
Because space changes everything. The quality of the spaces we live, work, and move through directly impacts our health, mindset, and connection to others. A well-designed home can reduce stress, improve relationships, even boost productivity.
For us, architecture is about:
- Designing with care
- Respecting the environment
- Delivering value and longevity
- And most importantly, creating spaces that feel right
Our work is grounded in that philosophy whether we’re designing a modest extension or a multi-unit development.
Final Thoughts from Connor
Connor:
At the heart of every great project is a great relationship. We’re here to listen, to challenge when needed, and to help clients achieve more than they thought possible, through design that is thoughtful, efficient, and emotionally resonant.
